Book Review - 7 Principles of Highly Accountable Men

7 Principles of Highly Accountable Men 7 Principles of Highly Accountable Men looks at the story of Nehemiah and draw lessons from his story that address accountability and how a man can excel in a group like FMO.  One of the benefits of the way this book is written is that is used real examples from both Nehemiah’s experience and examples from the author.  This book is not specifically for sexual addiction groups, but applies to any struggle where a man needs accountability.  The chapters can be covered in one or two weeks, and the whole book could be completed in 2 to 4 months.  I enjoyed looking deeper into Nehemiah’s story and learning from his experience.

The 7 Principles is a great foundational tool for beginning the journey into addiction recovery.

A great introduction for those seeking to apply accountability in their lives for the first time in their journey towards changing undesirable behaviors.

Overall, this book missed the mark with me. The structure was awkward in two ways. First, maybe only three of the habits were really about accountability. It seemed like he had a clever title idea but not appropriate content to match. It was really more of a recovery approach (like 12 steps) jammed into 7 habits. Second, the Nehemiah story wasn't compelling or helpful to the message. There were some nuggets of wisdom, but overall the content was sparse and secondary to the two unrelated structural gimmicks (7 Habits and Nehemiah).

I thought the book did a decent job of creating discussion around purity issues. The comparison to some of the biblical stories was a reach at times but not unprofitable. On a scale of 1-10 I would have given it a 7.5.

This is a good book to help men identify their needs, which is helpful with the needs-focused accountability lines we use in our groups. Our group found the book promotes discussion and is relevant. A good basic book for all people.
